Yellowware Bowl

For a year or more, I have had a small piece of indigo-dyed katazome by Karen Miller, www.nautilus-fiberarts.com, up on the design wall in my sewing room, while I tried to think of the right place to use it. A friend has a large collection of old yellowware mixing bowls which I dearly love for their shapes, simple bands of decoration and heft. One particular type of bowl has a wide white band with a 'seaweed' glaze pattern in blue or green. This katazome design reminded me of that patten. (Katazome: Japanese stencil technique using a rice paste resist.)
