A small tree with aromatic foliage, sassafras has three different shapes of leaves on the same plant. Some leaves are oval, some with one lobe in a classic mitten shape (some right handed mittens and some left handed mittens) and some have two lobes on opposite sides of the leaf. It is native to the eatern part of North America. I pieced the edges of the leaves, then hand appliqued about one inch of the seam at the sharp U-shape of each sinus. The background was cut from an antique piece of patchwork.
